MA, COME ON
Hey. You awake? my sister texted before calling me at seven in the morning.
âHello.â My voice was raspy. âRiley. Do you know how early it is? Ugh.â
âYeah. Whatever. Can you go to my room? Please, Ãtienne,â she begged.
Per her request, I went into her room and filled a bag with the clothes she directed me to pack, then went into the bathroom to grab her makeup bag. You wouldnât believe how heavy a teenage girlâs makeup is. Iâll never understand why she started using so much makeup. She didnât need it.
âOkay. Now get ready quick and bring it here before Mom goes to work.â
âRiley. Are you kidding? Mom has to drive me to work before she starts. Thereâs not enough time,â I complained.
âHurry up then. Come on, Ãtienne.â
I threw myself together as quickly as I possibly could. Thankfully Iâd already washed and styled my hair the night before. I didnât want to go to bed that night reeking of chlorine from the pool. Funny, isnât it? If youâve got thick stubborn hair like mine, the best thing to do is wash and style it the night before. It makes it so much easier to manage the next morning.
âWhat? Ãtienne, where are you going?â my mom roared as I ran into her room to grab the car keys.
âJust dropping off some clothes to Riley. Be right back.â
âOh. Hurry up. Itâs the boysâ last day of school and I still have to drop you off at work,â she said as I exited her room.
Itâs time for a car of my own.
âSo, what happened between you and Mom?â I asked my sister as she opened the passenger door. She was waiting outside my grandmaâs house and ran up to the car before I could even switch gears.
âNothing, Ãtienne. Go. You have to go to work.â
âYou rushed me and now Iâm early. What happened?â
She shook her head. âYou wonât talk about why youâre being weird lately either, so leave. Iâm not in the mood.â
âYouâre welcome,â I yelled out the window as she ran up the driveway.
I returned home to find my mom and my brothers waiting outside at the end of the driveway. I parked the car then moved to the passenger side so my mom could take command.
âYou fed Frankie and let him out, right?â I asked.
My mom nodded.
âYou made sure he was still inside and locked the door, right?â I asked.
âÃtienne. Itâs my house. Why would I forget to do that?â
I nodded in agreement.
Iâm obsessive when it comes to the well-being of my dog, and the security of the house. Especially after the one time I was home alone with Dana and a couple of kids from my street when we were eleven. We had been playing with water balloons in the backyard while the front and side doors were open. I went to the side of the house to fill more balloons from the hose when I thought I saw a figure move across the glass block basement window.
